Johannes Brahms

Four Ländler, Anh. Ia/6/17–20 (Franz Schubert)

no later than 1869

Total duration: 2'

Brahms was involved in the preparation of two editions of twenty ländler by Franz Schubert, one edition for piano duet and one for solo piano. The ländler comprise the first sixteen of the seventeen ländler (D 366), which Schubert wrote for solo piano, and the four ländler (D 814), which Schubert wrote for piano duet. To create the editions, arrangements were made of the first set of sixteen for piano duet, and the second set of four for solo piano. These arrangements were possibly, but probably not, made by Brahms himself.

In Schubert’s originals, the seventeenth dance from the D 366 set is, in fact, the same as the first dance from the D 814 set, with the former written for piano solo and the latter for piano duet. The arrangement for solo piano of this piece here is similar to, but different from, Schubert’s version for solo piano.
