Back to Franz Liszt
The impromptu is based on four themes, one each from Gioacchino Rossini’s operas La donna del lago and Armida and Gaspare Spontini’s operas Olympie and Fernand Cortez.
Liszt later re-used the introduction to this piece as the introduction to the seventh études of the Douze Grandes études (S. 137; LW A39; R. 2a) and the Douze Études d’exécution transcendante (S. 139; LW A172; R. 2b).
