Back to Franz Liszt
Liszt wrote the Erster Mephisto-Walzer (Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke) in versions for solo piano (S. 514; LW A189; R. 181) and for orchestra; it is not certain that one is a direct arrangement of the other.
Liszt paired the orchestral version of the Erster Mephisto-Walzer with a separate orchestral work, Der nächtliche Zug. These were published as the Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust (S. 110; LW G16; R. 427), which Liszt also arranged for piano duet (S. 599; LW B15; R. 325).
Around a decade later, Robert Freund arranged Der nächtliche Zug for solo piano, to which Liszt made extensive revisions (S. 513a).
