Liszt originally wrote the Dritter Mephisto-Walzer (S. 216; LW A325; R. 38) for piano. It also exists in an earlier, unpublished version (S. 215a) that most obviously differs in its shorter length; a further, intermediate version (S. 215b) also exists.

Liszt later made an arrangement for piano duet (S. 615a; LW B58) and, in one of the manuscripts, gave indications for a potential orchestral arrangement (S. 808).
