Olivier Messiaen

Fauvettes de l’Hérault

1958–1963

Between 1958 and 1963, Messiaen made extensive sketches for a concerto for piano and orchestra based on the birds of the Hérault: whilst the orchestration is fragmentary, the piano part is almost complete. Messiaen abandoned this project, although he incorporated some of this material in the Sept haïkaï for piano and small orchestra.

In 2012, from these sketches, Peter Hill prepared an edition of a solo piano work he called La Fauvette passerinette. By 2017, Roger Muraro prepared a similar, but longer, work he called Fauvettes de l’Hérault; this naturally shares much material with La Fauvette passerinette.
