The sonata, in five movements for violin and harpsichord, has a third movement for solo harpsichord.

The sonata also exists in two earlier versions (BWV1,2,2a 1019a; BWV3 1019.1 and 1019.2); the first of these has as its third movement the courante from the sixth partita (BWV 830/3) and as its fifth movement a variant of the Tempo di Gavotta from the same partita (BWV 830/6).
