These are piano versions of orchestral dances. The orchestral version has twelve dances; six were arranged for piano and published in Beethoven’s lifetime (nos. 8, 7, 4, 10, 9 and 1, in this ordering), and three more were also arranged for piano but not published (nos. 2, 5 and 12). The other three dances (nos. 3, 6 and 11) were apparently never arranged for piano. All nine of the arrangements are possibly spurious.

This arrangement is the second of the published collection. Beethoven used the same theme in the variations and fugue in E-flat major, op. 35, the finale of the ballet Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (op. 43), and the finale of the symphony no. 3 (op. 55).
