The theme is followed by forty-nine variations. Handel specifies that each variation is to be repeated; the duration given here assumes that these repetitions are not observed. The chaconne exists in an alternative version with twenty-six variations as part of the suite in C major (HWV 443); the twenty-six variations correspond to variations 1, 2, 4, 12–14, 16–19, 21, 25, 29–31, 34, 38–40, 42–44, 46–47, 49 and 48 of the forty-nine variations.
