The instrumentation of this piece is unspecified; the catalogue of Bernd Baselt describes it as for an instrumental upper voice and basso continuo. This is an arrangement of the final part of the overture to the first version of the opera Il Pastor fido (HWV 8a). This piece exists in various other versions: the lesson in D minor (HWV 495a), the lesson in D minor (HWV 495b), earlier and later versions of the last movement of the suite in D minor (HWV 428), as part of the organ concerto in D minor (HWV 309, op. 7 no. 4), and as part of the concerto grosso in D major (HWV 317, op. 3 no. 6).
