Back to Joseph Haydn
Works are identified by the catalogue of Anthony van Hoboken (Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis; Band 1: Instrumentalwerke; Schott, 1957, Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis; Band 2: Vokalwerke; Schott, 1971, and Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis; Band 3: Register, Addenda und Corrigenda; Schott, 1978).
The catalogue separates each section into three subsections depending on the authenticity of the work. Using section XVII (the piano pieces) as an example, the first subsection (XVII:1–6) comprises authentic works. The second subsection is indicated by asterisks (XVII:7*–12*) and comprises works that are possibly spurious. The third subsection finally lists spurious works by key (XVII:C1–C3, D1–D2, F1–F3, G1–G2 and A1–A3).
Opinions on authenticity have changed since Hoboken completed the catalogue: some pieces listed as authentic are now known to be spurious (for example, XVI/17), whilst other pieces listed as (possibly) spurious are now believed to be authentic (for example, XVII/9*).
The catalogue also includes throughout many contemporary arrangements of Haydn’s works, for example, piano arrangements of symphony movements, which are listed under the original works and also in appendices to sections IX and XVII. Unless explicitly numbered by Hoboken, the arrangements not by Haydn himself are not given here.
The Joseph-Haydn Institut has provisionally assigned further catalogue numbers to works not listed by Hoboken. With the exception of the sonata in F major (Hob. XVI:F3), these are not given here.
