Angelus! exists in many piano versions. The first version, Den Schutzengeln (Angelus) (S. 162a/i), is dated 27 September 1877 and contains 136 bars. Immediately after, Liszt made changes in the same manuscript to create a further version containing 154 bars (or 168 bars if an alternative is employed).
The second version, Aux Anges gardiens (S. 162a/ii), is dated 2 October 1877 and contains 158 bars. The third version, Angelus (S. 162a/iii), is dated 15 October 1877 and contains 167 bars. The fourth version, Angelus! (Prière à l’ange gardien) (S. 162a/iv), is dated 21–22 September 1880 and contains 193 bars. The fifth version, also called Angelus! (Prière à l’ange gardien) (S. 162a/v), is dated February 1882 and contains 241 bars.
The sixth version, Angelus! (Prière aux anges gardiens) contains 255 bars and was published as the first piece of the Années de pèlerinage, Troisième année (S. 163; LW A283; R. 10e).
The different versions are generally similar and primarily differ due to their increasing length and depth of development. The first three versions are written in 3/4 time; this was changed to 6/8 time from the fourth version onwards.
From the second version onwards, Liszt described the work as being suitable for piano or for harmonium, and included some alternative passages for performance on the harmonium (S. 672c; LW E30; R. 389). Liszt also made arrangements for string quartet (S. 378, LW D15, R. 473), string quintet (S. 378bis) and string orchestra (S. 353a).
