The Ballade no. 2 in B minor (S. 171; LW A181; R. 16) exists in an earlier version (S. 170a), which is essentially identical up to the ending. Whilst the final version of the ballade ends with a slow, andantino passage, the earlier version has a choice of two fast endings.
