Back to Franz Liszt
Liszt wrote the Erster Mephisto-Walzer (Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke) in versions for solo piano (S. 514; LW A189; R. 181) and for orchestra; it is not certain that one is a direct arrangement of the other.
Liszt paired the orchestral version of the Erster Mephisto-Walzer with a separate orchestral work, Der nächtliche Zug. These were published as the Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust (S. 110; LW G16; R. 427), which Liszt also arranged for piano duet (S. 599; LW B15; R. 325).
Around a decade later, Robert Freund arranged Der nächtliche Zug for solo piano, to which Liszt made extensive revisions (S. 513a).

Liszt later wrote two further passages related to the Erster Mephisto-Walzer. One possibility is that they are insertions, played after bars 327 and 445, to produce an extended version of the work (S. 514a). Another possibility is to play just the two passages separated by bars 339 to 445, omitting the rest of the work, to create a much easier, shorter piece based on the slow theme alone (S. 167m/2).
