The études are arrangements of works by Nicolò Paganini. The collection also exists in an earlier version from 1838, the Six Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini (S. 140; LW A52; R. 3a).

In the 1838 version, Liszt included also material based on the final movement of the first violin concerto (op. 6). Liszt also uses the theme from the second concerto in his Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur La Clochette (S. 420; LW A15; R. 231) and Grande Fantaisie sur des thèmes de Paganini (S. 700a/i; LW A113; R. 231 and S. 700a/ii; LW A113; R. 231).
