Back to Franz Liszt
The original version of this work is the Grand solo de concert (S. 175a) for solo piano from around 1849. Liszt began, but did not finish, an arrangement of this for piano and orchestra (S. 365; LW H11).
Soon after, Liszt revised the solo work as the Grosses Konzertsolo (S. 176; LW A167; R. 18); the most obvious difference is the addition of an andante sostenuto section. In around 1855, Liszt made a version of this for two pianos, the Concerto pathétique (S. 258i; LW C18; R. 356); there also exists a version with revisions by Hans von Bülow (S. 258ii; LW C18; R. 356). Further, Eduard Reuss re-wrote the Concerto pathétique for piano and orchestra, to which Liszt made further changes (S. 365b; LW H11) in around 1885.
