Petőfi Sándor is based on Dem Andenken Petőfis, which exists in two versions: a published one (S. 195i; LW A179; R. 111) and an unpublished revision (S. 195ii). This, in turn, is based on themes from the melodrama A holt költő szerelme (S. 349; LW P5; R. 657). Mosonyi Mihály is based on Mosonyis Grabgeleit (S. 194; LW A249; R. 110); only the final bars are slightly different.
The collection was published after Liszt’s death in the now-familiar order given on this page (S. 205). However, there is evidence to suggest that Liszt ultimately intended a different order (S. 205a).
