La Notte, S. 516a

LW A202/2 · R. 664 · 1863–1864

Liszt’s Trois Odes funèbres comprise three pieces: Les Morts, La Notte and Le Triomphe funèbre du Tasse.

Liszt originally wrote the pieces for orchestra (S. 112; LW G25; R. 429), and later made arrangements for solo piano (S. 516, 516a (formerly 699) and 517; LW A202; R. 183, 664 and 184) and piano duet (S. 601–603; LW B23; R. 327–329). He further arranged the first piece for organ, under the title Trauerode (S. 268/2; LW E7; R. 390/2), the second piece for violin and piano (S. 377a; LW D9; R. 464a), and the third piece for two pianos (now lost) (S. 757; LW S57).

The second piece is based on Il Penseroso from Années de pèlerinage, Deuxième année (Italie) (S. 161; LW A55; R. 10b). The third piece was written as an epilogue to the symphonic poem Tasso: Lamento e Trionfo (S. 96; R. 413; LW G2), which Liszt also arranged for two pianos (S. 636; LW C10; R. 358) and piano duet (S. 590; LW B20; R. 316).
