Back to Franz Liszt
Total duration: 24'
Liszt wrote the oratorio Christus (S. 3; LW I7; R. 478) for orchestra, soloists and choir. He also prepared a vocal score (S. 3bis).
The Zwei Orchestersätze aus dem Oratorium Christus (S. 498b; LW A222; R. 478) for solo piano were published in Liszt’s lifetime. They are taken virtually unchanged from the vocal score and comprise Hirtengesang an der Krippe (no. 4) and Die drei heiligen Könige (Marsch) (no. 5). Liszt also arranged the same extracts for piano duet (S. 579; LW B30; R. 335).
As described by Leslie Howard, two further sections can be played directly from the vocal score as pieces for solo piano: the Einleitung und Pastorale (no. 1 and the opening of no. 2) and Das Wunder (no. 9). Howard describes these as Zwei Stücke aus dem Oratorium Christus (S. 498c).
Further, Die Gründung der Kirche (Tu es Petrus) (no. 8) from Christus is based on an earlier work that exists in a version for solo piano: L’Hymne du Pape (S. 530; LW A228; R. 190).
The Einleitung leads into the Pastorale without pause.
