Total duration: 22' 30"
Liszt wrote the oratorio Die Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth (S. 2; LW I4; R. 477) for orchestra, soloists and choir. He also prepared a vocal score (S. 2bis).
The Drei Stücke aus der Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth (S. 498a; LW A192; R. 477) for solo piano were published in Liszt’s lifetime. They are taken virtually unchanged from the vocal score and comprise the introduction, the Marsch der Kreuzritter (no. 3d, with an adaptation of the beginning of no. 3a as an introduction), and the Interludium (no. 6a).
Liszt also arranged Vier Stücke aus der Legende von der heiligen Elisabeth (S. 578; LW B27; R. 334) for piano duet, comprising the aforementioned three movements with Sturm (no. 4d), as well as arranging the introduction for organ (S. 663a; LW E25).
Finally, Leslie Howard describes how two further movements (S. 693a) can be played by solo piano by making only minor changes to the vocal score: Sturm (no. 4d) and Das Rosenmirakel (no. 2c).
