This piece is a paraphrase on the medieval plainsong Dies irae. The piece was written for piano and orchestra in 1852 (S. 126ii; LW H8; R. 457), and later arranged for two pianos (S. 652; LW C24; R. 374) and for solo piano (S. 525; LW A62; R. 188). There also exists an earlier version for piano and orchestra from 1849 (S. 126i; LW H8; R. 457).
