Back to Franz Liszt
The Vierter Mephisto-Walzer (S. 216b, 696; LW A337; R. 661) was unpublished and apparently incomplete: in the manuscript, bar 184 is deleted in place of an unfinished, andantino sketch of around seventy bars. Despite this, the andantino can simply be omitted and the deleted bar restored to create an effective work. The latest version of the Searle catalogue identifies the versions with and without the andantino as S. 696 and S. 216b respectively. A completion of the andantino exists in a version by Leslie Howard.
Liszt previously used the title Vierter Mephisto-Walzer to describe the Bagatelle sans tonalité (S. 216a; LW A338; R. 60c).
