The theme, from Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera La Rencontre imprévue ou Les Pèlerins de Mecque (known to Mozart in its German translation Die unvermuthete Zusammenkunft oder Die Pilgrime von Mekka), is followed by ten variations.

The variations also exist in an earlier, incomplete version with five variations. The first, second, third and (incomplete) fifth variations correspond to the first, second, third and eighth variations respectively in the final version, whilst the fourth variation is not found in the final version.
