It is not known whether Schubert intended these pieces to be played together as a sonata. The first version of Otto Erich Deutsch’s catalogue of Schubert’s works collects the pieces as Fünf Klavierstücke (D 459), as they were originally published. The second version lists the first two pieces as an incomplete Sonata in E major (D 459) and the last three as Drei Klavierstücke (D 459A).
