The forty-three pieces are split into two books; the first (nos. 1–18) für Kleinere, and the second (nos. 19–43) für Erwachsenere.
Schumann also considered further pieces that were not included in the final collection. The nineteen completed pieces are included on these pages with the numbering by Ernst Herttrich from his edition for Henle. Incipits for four fragmentary pieces are also given. Further, the table below gives all thirty completed, fragmentary and planned pieces with the Herttrich numberings and the numbering from the McCorkle catalogue.
