The studies are arrangements of extracts from Nicolò Paganini’s twenty-four caprices for solo violin (op. 1); another six arrangements are the Studien nach Capricen von Paganini (op. 3). Schumann also later wrote piano accompaniments to the original twenty-four caprices (Anh. O8).
